I'd rather take a display that's 90% of the claimed brightness and 100% color-consistent than one that hits every lumen number and drifts green after a week.

The 'Laser' Label Doesn't Tell You Much

The old 'all LED panels are the same' thinking comes from an era when LED walls were only used for concerts and street billboards. That's changed. The same LED technology is now expected to work in an operating room or a retail store. There's no room for 'good enough' when a clinician or a customer is reading an image.
The Backpack LED Screen Lesson
I don't usually certify a backpack LED screen. It's not something we manufacture, and I won't pretend otherwise. But I've watched enough of them wander around trade shows to know a good one from a bad one. The first thing you notice is not the brightness or the pixel pitch—it's whether the image fits the moment. A brilliant display on a moving person is often just a bright blur. That's not the panel's fault. It's a system design failure.
The same lesson applies to an LED presentation screen. You can bolt a perfect panel to a wall, but if the content, scaler, and lighting aren't working together, it's still a bad experience. I've seen a $30,000 screen look worse than a $50 monitor because nobody checked the signal settings.

They redid the build at their cost. That project taught me that every display has a viewing story. You can't write that story in a spec sheet.
This is also where I learned my verification lesson. I used to trust 'factory calibrated' reports. Then I skipped the final on-site check on a 2×2 LED presentation screen because we were rushing. It was 'basically the same as last time.' It wasn't. The customer noticed a tint difference by week two. That service visit cost more than the calibration check would have.

'Factory calibrated' is a claim. 'Seamless video wall' is a claim. If the vendor can't show the measurement instrument, the tolerance, and the date, treat it as marketing.

- Uniformity at 30%, 50%, and 80% gray
- Primary chromaticity after a 30-minute warm-up
- Panel-to-panel delta E in the worst-case scenario
- Behavior under a signal failure or failover event
This takes time. It's not glamorous. It's also why I'd rather approve a Barco system that's been through the process than accept a cheaper LED presentation screen on faith. The brand gives you a starting point. The verification gives you the truth.
Still My Bottom Line
I won't tell you every deployment needs a Barco system. There are honest displays that aren't Barco. But I will tell you this: a bright, expensive display with no verification protocol is a beautiful risk. A Barco system with a rigorous acceptance process is a decision you can defend.
So buy the evidence, not the brochure. If that evidence points to a Barco RGB laser projector, excellent. If it points to a well-tested LED presentation screen from another brand, also excellent. Just don't skip the part where you look at the actual image with your own eyes. That's where the brand promise becomes a delivered reality.
I've been using this checklist since 2022. As of April 2025, I still haven't found a reason to shorten it.
