But the real win came after the install.
The lobby was used for a Q1 investor day. The content loop showcased the company’s new facility renderings alongside live stock tickers. - Define the physical constraints first. Pillars, beams, glass, and lighting matter more than spec sheets.
- Match the tech to the viewing distance. A transparent LED poster looks great from 6 feet away. If the viewing distance is 2 feet, it’s the wrong choice. That’s a deal-breaker.
- Ask about ambient light at peak hours. An overcast morning test is not enough. I got lucky; the lobby’s peak foot traffic was at 4 PM when the sun was on the other side of the building. If it had been east-facing, the projector might have washed out. I should have tested at different times.
- Check the content pipeline. The client’s excitement about daily updates faded when they realized someone had to make the content. We ended up automating it via a drag-and-drop CMS. It wasn’t part of the original scope, but it was necessary for visibility to actually work.
I made a mistake in that project that could have been costly: I nearly specified a $30,000 LED wall when the client needed a $14,000 transparent LED poster. That kind of mistake is the classic “gold-plating” failure.
The lesson isn’t that transparent LED is always better. The lesson is: don’t fall in love with the display technology before you’ve understood the space and the brand. A Barco RGB laser projector can outperform an LED wall for color fidelity, but if people cast shadows over the image in the entrance lobby, it’s the wrong tool, no matter how excellent it is.
But, hey, at least I didn’t have a complete disaster. The only embarrassing part was when I told the client the projector test would take 45 minutes and it took 2 hours because I forgot the alignment brackets. (Note to self: always bring spare brackets to a site visit.)
Bottom line: if you want to enhance brand visibility, start with the building, not the brochure. The display tech is just the messenger.
